It is interesting that although by heading south, we are thinking lots of sunshine, much warmer weather. We could be expecting to find lots of red wines? However... Campania is actually well known for producing more white wines than reds.
It is a fairly mountainous and hilly region, as are most of the southern wine areas.
Grapes grown in vineyards at higher altitudes can benefit from relatively cooler growing conditions. This means they can have a longer ripening season which gives the best chance of producing ripe grapes that also maintain a good balance between sugar and acidity levels. This will help create wines with good acidity and freshness. It means higher vineyards are often not harvested until October – not quite the profile you might have in your mind of hot southern Italy.
So in terms of grapes we are looking at: Greco di Tufo and Falanghina for the whites, and Aglianico and Piedirosso for the reds.
