Piedirosso is one of Italy’s most ancient grape varieties; the name means ‘red feet’, a description of the red colour the stems take as the berries mature. There are just 1000 hectares of Piedirosso and the vast majority is in Campania and Puglia.
The vineyard faces southwest, with soils a mix of sand and volcanic matter. The vines are over 150 years old and this is the first time Gennaro has made a monopole* from this albarello-trained* vineyard.
The harvest is at the start of November. After sorting and crushing, the must* is fermented in a temperature-controlled steel tank for 15 days, with no aggressive colour extracting practises. The wine is then aged in botti* for 6 months before bottling.
