Cantina Roccafiore is a family cellar amongst the green rolling hills of Umbria, in the shadow of Monte Martano. The proximity to the mountain provides the farm with constant fresh breezes, perfect for healthy vineyards. Roccafiore was created in the late 1990’s when Leonardo and Francesca Baccarelli bought the land and immediately planted vineyards on the cooler east-facing slopes, they had the foresight start work on an agriturismo that incorporates a restaurant, rooms, pool and a boutique spa. For me, the inspired purchase was an old vineyard of Grechetto di Todi which is now the source of the estates’ flagship wine, ‘Fiorfiore’.
Roccafiore is now managed by Leonardo’s son, Luca. He is in the vanguard of raising the wines of Todi from obscurity, a huge task helped by the creation of Todi DOC in 2010. It is a sub-zone that specialises in Grechetto inside the larger, and equally unknown DOC of Colli Martani. Historically Todi is known for simple wine from a couple of large producers, there are around 15 young producers challenging this image. Luca is committed to sustainable agriculture, he finds organic regulations out of sync with his own ideas, which are more extreme!
It is worth mentioning that Roccafiore also make two wines in Montefalco, they are from a rented vineyard and the reason behind their existence is largely that nobody has heard of Todi, whereas Montefalco is quite famous. By also making these wines Luca has increased his ability to be present on the global market.
