Grapes: Sagrantino (30%), Montepulciano (30%), Sangiovese (40%)
Luca is a great supporter of the 2020 vintage, humanity may have been in a state of flux, but the climate was unusually usual, and his wines were wonderfully balanced. This has the generous tannic structure that is unavoidable when Sagrantino is involved; there is a powerful flow of velvety black cherry fruit, a touch of cinnamon, clove and roast game. This may be a huge, complex and beautiful wine, but it is just so easy! 14%
As the vines are outside Montefalco, Sagrantino may not be mentioned on this label. This is strangely useful as Luca has the freedom to create his own wine that compliments Todi’s white clays and limestone. The vines were planted in 1999 on a northeast facing slope, Guyot trained at a density of 6500 vines per hectare, each vine yielding about 1kg of grapes. The harvest is by hand, and the bunches are de-stemmed before crushing. Then it undergoes a wild yeast fermentation in temperature controlled steel tanks, on the skins for 3 weeks. Each variety is aged separately in French oak barriques for 2 years. The wine is then blended and aged in steel for 6 months before bottling.
