Villa Guelpa. Boca

Villa Guelpa. Boca

Boca DOC
Grape: Nebbiolo (90%), Vespolina (10%)

Fine restraint, taut, spring-water freshness, with sage and white flower aromas lifting immaculate blueberry and black cherry fruit, backed by orange skin. An intricate and precise wine.  13.5%

Villa Guelpa producer page

I have been looking forward to this wine, Daniele has had the vineyard since 2016 and, finally happy with the quality of the grapes in 2019, he made his first Boca.

The vines are 18 years old, Guyot trained at 3500 vines per hectare. Villa Guelpa have just over a hectare of south-facing vineyard to the north of Boca where the soils are pink, porphyritic gravels (of volcanic origin), rich in minerals and poor in organic matter; the low PH enforces low yields, and an unusual freshness to the wine.

The grapes are hand-picked by family and friends and stored at 4ºC overnight. In the morning the bunches are destemmed and sorted before crushing, then a spontaneous fermentation in unlined, concrete tanks with no temperature control takes place; the wine remains with the skins for 15 days. It is aged for 3 years in Slavonian botti, after which it is bottled without filtration.
