Picech. Friulano 'Athena'
Picech. Friulano 'Athena'
Collio Friulano DOC
Grape: Friulano
2019 Ripe apple, lime, lemon and wild honey flavours; crusty bread and wild flower aromas. A deeply textured and powerful wine, very special. 14%
2020 was an excellent vintage across Italy, a hot summer without exceptional peaks and timely rain to refresh the vines. In this corner of the Collio, there was no disease pressure, it was a great year.
Spring meadow aromas, wonderfully rich apple and apricot fruit woven through with honeyed spice, dry hay and nutmeg flavours. There is a gentle hold of tannin revealing some skin contact, giving it a little red-wine like feel.
Athena is named after Roberto and Alessia’s daughter. The grapes are grown on a plot of Friulano planted in 1966 and 1997 using a Guyot* system, at a density of between 4500-5500 plants per hectare. The vineyard is harvested by hand at the end of September and the bunches are de-stemmed before a spontaneous fermentation on the skins, without temperature control for 15 days in large, open oak barrels (2500ltr). The wine is then pressed and aged in tonneaux for 18 months and bottled without filtration.
