Gillardi. Barolo La Morra
Gillardi. Barolo La Morra
Barolo DOCG
Grape: Nebbiolo
2018 This is a favourite wine of mine from this vintage; a seductive wine that shows the best side of 2018, which was all about ripe, fresh, super-clean fruit and soft, inviting tannins. Plum and black cherry, violet and sweet herb, a Barolo that will get to the finish line early and is none the worse for that. 14%

Gillardi is a bit of an outsider in Barolo, their cellar is in Dogliani, outside of Barolo’s boundaries; to meet Barolo’s regulations they must vinify and age their Barolo in a second location within Barolo’s boundaries.
Gillardi’s 1.3ha of Barolo vineyard is all within the parish of La Morra, a village famed for elegant, fine, floral Nebbiolo. Each cru has completely different soils which together create a classic, traditional style of Barolo. Gillardi’s winemaking style is perhaps best described as rigorous simplicity: some of the vines are over 40 years old, all Guyot trained, immaculately tended.
The grapes are hand-picked, de-stemmed and fermented using indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled steel tanks. The wine is then aged for 36 months in Slavonian botti.
