Taurasi is one of Campania’s great red wines, from a high, hilly area, rich with volcanic ash deposits, a loose soil that protected vines from phylloxera. The high altitude holds back ripening making it one of Italy’s latest harvests. It is a historic wine with a great terroir, which is why Ferrante, whose own vineyards are half an hour to the east, has rented vineyards in Montemarano and Luogosano for many years, just to make Taurasi. The soils here are a mix of chalk and ash from Vesuvius and even the young vines are more than 30 years old; all cordon spur trained at a density of 4000 vines per hectare. Ferrante and his winemaker Vincenzo Mercurio have a slightly alternative approach: they want an elegant, yet genuine wine. The bunches are destemmed and given a 10-day, high temperature fermentation with the skins. The wine is then aged in steel for 2 years, then in used tonneaux for another 2 years.
