Ghemme DOCG
Grape: Nebbiolo
A wonderfully balanced vintage: loose, full cherry and plum fruit, some spice and vanilla peeking through; fine ripe herb and blood orange, rich and powerful. Quite delicious, unusually friendly. 14%

Ghemme is one of the great old Nebbiolo towns of the Alto Piemonte. The vineyards are freshened by the winds from the Monte Rosa, which blow unhindered over the north-south ridge left by the retreating Monte Rosa glacier, which deposited a wonderfully complex terroir, making this an extremely rare example of Nebbiolo grown on fluvio-glacial soils.
The vines were planted in 2008, a third was re-planted in 2019 (not yet in production) with the local Cobianco clone. The grapes are hand-picked and taken to the winery in small crates. The bunches are de-stemmed, and fermented with the skins for 3 weeks, using selected yeasts and regular pumping over. The wine then matures for 2 years in a 10hl and a 5hl botti, both made by Garbellotto, using untoasted French oak. This wine was bottled without filtration.
