Cosimi. Brunello di Montalcino 'Il Poggiolo'

Cosimi. Brunello di Montalcino 'Il Poggiolo'

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG
Grape: Sangiovese

2015.  Strawberry, damson and rose, flint, tarragon, raw maple, lovely nose. An elemental wine, deep and nuanced with iron, earth and cedar embracing ripe dark blackberry and cherry fruit. A lovely texture with fine mature tannins.

6666 bottles produced.

2015 is, quite rightly, a very highly regarded, hot vintage. I was fortunate enough to be on the Decanter panel tasting for the 2015 vintage (113 wines) and have the choice of the tasting note written at Podere Il Poggiolo, or the one from the blind tasting in the Docklands...
'A classic, natural feeling, pretty wine, delicate and nuanced.' 95 points (blind tasting at Decanter November 2020)

This Brunello is the farm’s passport, a wine whose style was developed by Rudi’s father and has evolved over time through improvements made in both the vineyard and the cellar. It is fermented in large open oak casks with a regular punching down of the cap. The wine is aged for 3 years in large casks and bottled without filtration.

Archived notes:

2012 is a wine with enormous potential, this was a hot vintage and the tannins are big, remarkably they do not take over the wine and there is lovely bramble and cassis fruit, dark cherry and spice. 14%
