Carlo Revello. Barolo La Morra 'Boiolo'
Carlo Revello. Barolo La Morra 'Boiolo'
Barolo DOCG
Comune di La Morra, MGA Broiolo
Grape: Nebbiolo
Immaculate red cherry and damson fruit, with a fine citrus nerve running through a deeply textured, complex wine. 14.5%
Until recently, Boiolo was largely ignored as an MGA*; it is big (88ha), and has 2 very distinct soils and a wavering hillside, there is no simple interpretation of the MGA.
Carlo and Erik have 0.88ha of steep, southwest-facing land on the highest part of the hillside, where the soils are ‘Tortonian Sant ’Agata fossil marls’; marked by an unusual amount of chalk, less sand; silt and clay topsoils that thinly cover sedimentary limestone.
The brothers bought the vineyard in 2000 and the top part in 2004 which they replanted with the Lampia clone of Nebbiolo. The vines are Guyot trained and yield approximately 6 tons/ha. The harvest is by hand and all the bunches de-stemmed before a temperature-controlled spontaneous fermentation. The wine remains on the skins for 3 weeks. Ageing is in a single 15 hl botti for 2 years.
