Ascheri. Barolo 'Sorano'
Barolo DOCG
Grape: Nebbiolo
It is a wine that reflects Matteo’s open and welcoming character, with rich damson and black cherry fruit, supported by ripe, soft tannins - delicate elements of rose, porcini and spice add complexity and promise for longevity. 14%
Serralunga is the most easterly of the Barolo villages where ancient, mean Serravallian soils* force roots down deep, making for more tannic and fuller bodied Barolo. Matteo has chosen to make this wine only in the best years: in lesser vintages the wine lends a hand to the Ascheri Barolo.
2019 was a hot vintage, coming after an unusually tropical 2018, which had left good reserves of water so, there was no real problems with stress, the vines were very healthy, and the grapes were in excellent condition.
The bunches were destemmed and sorted before a temperature-controlled fermentation that lasted two weeks. 60% of the wine then went through a traditional 25 day submerged cap* maceration. The wine was then aged in steel for 6 months followed by 28 months in botti (Slavonian oak).
