Pianta Grossa. BiancOne

Pianta Grossa. BiancOne

Vino Bianco
Grape: Erbaluce

Apricot, apple, peach, lavender and spring flower aromas.  Richly textured floral and citrus fruit, with almond and crusty bread flavours, lovely complex salt, sage  and vanilla nuance, a beautifully balanced, vibrant wine.

There is some contention over grape type Erbaluce, the producers of Caluso whose potassium rich, gravelly soils, which inflict a white blemish on the leaves’ extremities have a claimed to a unique terroir, and so they have applied for and received protected status which means no part of ‘Erbaluce di Caluso’ can be used by wines that do not fall within the boundaries and meet the stipulations of the DOC.  This is bad news for Luciano who is just 20 miles north, on the steep morainic terraces of Donnas, he must call his wine Vino Bianco; a lowly status that cannot mention a vintage or grape type.  That said, he has no problem selling this wine and we have only a very small allocation.

The Erbaluce is grown on Valdostana pergolas* that cling to the slopes of Croix Corma in the hamlets of Donnas and Pont. St. Martin.  The vines are at a density of 3000 plants per hectare, a largely irrelevant fact in this extreme situation.  The yield is around 5 tons per hectare, every part of the viticulture is manual, the work is the very definition of extreme winemaking, no machines are possible.  The grapes are picked in the second half of October, cold soaked* for 7 days before a spontaneous fermentation in French oak barriques*, followed by a year in the same barrels where it goes through a full malolactic conversion.
