Oreste Buzio. Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese

Oreste Buzio. Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese

Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese DOC
Grape: Grignolino

This is a wine that expresses a hedgerow, rather than primary fruit character; the bright colours may have been removed from the spectrum, character has not. 13%

Grignolino is an ancient stalwart of Piemonte whose small berries are marked by an abundance of seeds, so less pulp, careful handling is essential to control the tannins.  It has hardly moved from its homeland in the Casalese region where it has a reputation as a wild youth that matures into an elegant and aromatic wine after a couple of years.
Oreste Buzio are masters with Grignolino, the vines were planted in 2002 and 2006, Guyot trained, at a density of around 4000 vines per hectare.  The soils are chalky, on a southeast facing slope, only natural fertilizers and treatments are used and turning the soil is kept to a minimum.
The grapes are hand-picked; production is roughly 6.5 tons per hectare.  Fermentation is in steel tanks using wild yeasts, and the wine is aged in steel for 6 months before bottling.
