Benaco IGT
Grapes: Marzemino, Rebo, Groppello
Raspberry and damson jam aromas, ripe strawberry, cinnamon and fig flavours. There is an intriguing vein of salt that lifts this from simple pleasure to excellent. 14.5%
The thinking behind this wine was to step outside of Groppello’s limitations and create a robust Riserva from local varieties, capable of long ageing, a remix that remains true to the terroir of these Morainic hills. The achieve this the grapes are selected from old, Guyot-trained vines, grown on the best 6 parcels of land, the average age of the vines is over 50 years old.
Marzemino is a little known grape variety, it is one of the old Italian cultivars descended from Teroldego; it has lowish levels of tannin and plenty of soft fruit, it is said that Mozart was a fan. Rebo is a crossing of Teroldego and Merlot; it gives lots of colour and ripe forest fruit, decent tannin too, the Groppello di Mocasina delivers some restraint and refinement.
Each variety is picked and fermented separately before being assembled into a single barrel.
