Derthona is the Roman name for the area that we call Colli Tortonesi. For a wine to be called Derthona, it must be Timorasso only, the vines must be in the Colli Tortonesi. This is an ancient wine that is enjoying a deserved resurgence, great names from Barolo and Barbaresco are now investing here.
This is Francesco’s second Dertona, made from a rented 30 year old, vineyard called Ca’ dell Aglio near Brignano-Frascata. The soils are thin, rich in chalk, sparsely laid over a bed of limestone.
The grapes were hand-picked at the end of September. The bunches gently pressed, then macerated* for a few hours to allow the juice naturally to flow out. The fermentation was with selected yeasts, in a steel temperature-controlled (16ºC) tank. The wine was then aged on the lees* for 1 year with a weekly bâtonnage*.
