Giustini. Primitivo di Manduria 'Areale'

Primitivo di Manduria DOC
Grape: Primitivo

A big, firm, and correct Primitivo, rich cherry and damson fruit, spicy, sweet tannins. A generous style that is shamelessly powerful. 14.5%

Giustini producer page

The vines are between 30 and 35 years old, Guyot-trained on a gentle slope running down to an inland sea. The soils are clay and sand, rich in maritime fossils over limestone. A constant wind off the sea brings some welcome relief and lower night-time temperatures.
2022 was not an easy vintage, mildew struck in June and a fifth of the crop was lost. The summer dragged on, and an unusually warm September forced the pickers to get up extremely early to avoid the heat; a small, high-quality crop was brought in. The fermentation was started using a vineyard pied de cuve*, it lasted 10 days and temperatures were kept below 26°C. The wine was then pressed and aged in French barrique for a few months before a light filtration and bottling.
