Giustini. Fiano 'Avoglia'
Salento IGT
Grape: Fiano
2023 was very wet, and many farmers lost everything, Giustini were very fortunate and lost only 30% of their crop, and what was left was excellent. A wine with more concentration, laced with tropical fruit, mango and lime dominating. 12%
Fiano is one of Italy’s most ancient and greatest white grapes. The Romans called Fiano ‘Latino’, however it fell from grace and by the 1960s was all but extinct and were it not for Antonio Mastroberardino it may have disappeared altogether. Today it is one of the few Italian varieties gaining global popularity.
Giustini’s Fiano vines are mostly 10 years old, trained using a double Guyot system, on a gentle slope that drops into the ‘Mare Picolo’, a small inland sea east of Taranto. The soils are brown clays, and the sea both moderates and ensures a constant air movement through the vineyard.
The grapes are machine-picked in the middle of September and have a short journey to the winery where they are de-stemmed* and pressed with no maceration and fermented in temperature-controlled steel tanks at 16oC.
