Cantina Frentana producer page

For many years Cococciola grapes were used as part of the Trebbiano d’Abruzzo blend.  As a grape type it mades the odd appearance in Molise, more often in Puglia and until the nineties, it did not feature at all as a varietal wine.  Now it is finally included in the Abruzzo DOC as a varietal wine, nowhere else, and it remains very rare.
Frentana make this wine from a beautiful southeast facing Cococciola vineyard that is just few hundred meters from the sea.  With an almost constant breeze to cool the grapes, the vines are trained using a traditional tendone system, this provides natural shade and slightly lengthens the growing season.  The bunches are quite loose and there is little or no need for green harvesting.  The grapes are hand-picked, pressed, fermented and aged in temperature-controlled steel tanks.  Malolactic conversion is blocked.
