Cococciola has always played a supporting role as part of the Trebbiano d’Abruzzo made around Chieti. It also makes the odd appearance in Molise and Puglia though until the nineties, it did not feature as a varietal wine, merely as part of a blend. Frentana make this wine from a beautiful southeast facing vineyard of Cococciola that is just few hundred meters from the sea. With an almost constant breeze to cool the grapes, the vines are trained using a traditional tendone system, this provides natural shade and slightly lengthens the growing season. The bunches are quite loose and there is little or no need for green harvesting.
The harvest is made by hand and the grapes are transported the short distance to the winery in small crates. They are lightly crushed and the juice is fermented in temperature-controlled steel tanks. Malolactic conversion is blocked. Cococciola has a marked lime and zesty character.
