Favaro. Freisa 'F2' 2018
Favaro. Freisa 'F2' 2018
Vino Rosso
Grape: Freisa
The 2018 is a lovely supple vintage, producing fresh wines with soft, easy tannins. Freisa shows aged flavours nice and early, which comes across as real complexity, not a big wine, a really interesting one though.
Freisa is a versatile, strong-charactered native grape variety of Piemonte; producers use it to make everything from frothy, sweet reds to seriously tannic monsters.
The vineyard, 'Vigna Riva Molini', is just 1/5th of a hectare, south facing at an altitude of 380m, morainic soils with a high proportion of stones. The vines are Guyot trained and grapes are picked by hand.
Half of the Freisa is fermented conventionally, the other half utilises a whole grape technique. The two wines are then put together and aged in steel. Production: 750 bottles.
It is a true study on the variety by a winemaker who loves and believes in the grape. Camillo has kept the essential character of Freisa whilst achieving some degree of control and taming its more raucous characteristics.
