Colle Gioie. Cesanese 'Col le Radici'

Colle Gioie. Cesanese 'Col le Radici'

Cesanese del Piglio DOCG
Grape  Cesanese

Deep, sapid damson and cherry fruit, laced with pepper and cinnamon.  A vigorous and Moorish wine.  14%

2023 was a strange year, there were 60% less grapes than usual thanks to Peronospora (a mildew) that proved neigh impossible to eradicate.  The quality however was excellent; in 2023 no Pied de Cuve was needed to kick start the fermentation; it was off like a train the second the grapes were crushed.  The wine remains on the skins for about 3 weeks, care is taken to avoid excessive extraction, just an occasional pumping over and manual soaking of the cap.  The wine is aged in steel tank over the winter, where it naturally settles and after 6 months it is bottled with no filtration.

Colle Gioie producer page

Cesanese is a red grape, named after the village of Cesano from where the vine has barely strayed.
Gioie has vines aged between 20 and 70 years old, some are Guyot, others Cordone trained on volcanic soils, while lower parts of the vineyard have more sand.
