Collection: Colle Gioie
Piglio, Lazio
Piglio has kept a fiercely independent identity despite its relative proximity to Rome. The larger area is known locally as Ciociaria, a reference to the simple strapped sandals (cioce) worn by shepherds, these were lands once roamed by bandits and pilgrims; now it is better known for its raw beauty, artisan wines and gastronomy.
Antonella Necci and her husband Giovanni Ceccaroni own 6 small plots that Antonella’s family have farmed for generations as grape growers. In 2021, Cantina Colle Gioie was created and whilst Giovanni still (also) works for the post office, Antonella works full-time in the wine business with her father helping in the vineyards. A family friend, Gabriele Graia, who makes wine in Argentina, brings technical expertise and advice to help make these low-tech wines beautiful.
Their 2 hectares are split between the indigenous Cesanese and Passerina grapes, both of which enjoy the altitude and sandy, volcanic soils. The farming is meticulous, and winemaking artisan, producing natural wines with great skill.
