Fattoria del Pino

Montalcino, Toscana. Central Italy

Jessica Pelligrini owner and winemaker at Fattoria del Pino in Montalcino, Tuscany, Toscana making boutique Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino and a small amount of Sangiovese Toscana IGT

This is a tiny farm on the north side of Montalcino in the vicinity of Montosoli. The vineyard is halfway down the slope where the soils are a typical local mix of marl, clay, limestone and sandstone. What is unusual is the high percentage of chalk which provides fresh, floral notes to Jessica’s wines.
The five hectare plot was purchased by Jessica Pellegrini’s grandfather, a lumberjack in the surrounding forests, he sold all of his grapes. In 2000 Jessica decided to make the move into winemaking, which he fully supported, despite the misogynistic environment that was still so prevalent in rural Tuscany. Together, they created ‘Fattoria del Pino’, the barn is still in conversion, the winery is finished and immaculate, bathroom facilities have only just been installed! (By Jess during lockdown).
Montoli is one of the most highly prized crus (sites) in Montalcino, it is one of the best places on earth to grow Sangiovese, so Jessica has planted only Sangiovese from which she makes: Brunello, Rosso di Montalcino and Toscana IGT. Sadly, only a small part of her 5 hectares was registered by her Grandfather for the production of Brunello (rights to which are restricted). Without a lottery win, Jessica’s Brunello production will remain miniscule and so her other reds will benefit massively.
Jessica’s approach to both vineyards and cellar is to work with nature: the land is organically farmed with only natural fertilizers used, chickens roam free and space is reserved for horses, currently pets that she rarely has time to ride. The cellar is equipped with botti grande and a few steel tanks, no barrique.
