Ferruccio Carlotto. Pinot Noir 'Filari di Mazzon'

Ferruccio Carlotto. Pinot Noir 'Filari di Mazzon'

Alto Adige DOC
Grape: Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir)

Black cherry to wild strawberry fruit, there is a latent power to this wine; big, mature tannins, spice and earthy flavours vie for attention.  This is extraordinary, some cellar time and it will be magnificent.  14%

Ferruccio Carlotto producer page

Mazzon has a complex glacial mix of sand, chalk, clay (15%) and limestone, over ancient sedimentary rock.  The vineyards are west facing, at the foot of ‘Monte Corno” in the Dolomites.  There are less than 15 producers on this cru; Girlan (a co-operative) is the largest, Carlotto are not so far behind with 4 hectares.

Mazzon ‘fields’: Kreuzl was planted in 2010; Paggen in 2000; Loch 2014; Oberes Langfeld 2000; Unteres Langfeld, 2015; Auf dem Bichl, 2019 and Keilackerl in 2013.

Bunches are sorted, destemmed, crushed, and gravity fed into open foudres*.  The fermentation and maceration of the skins lasts 10 days, over this period the wine is pumped over the skins every day.  The wine is then transferred to botti and barrique to age for a year.  The final blend is then made, and the wine is kept in steel tank and botti for another 3 months before bottling.
