Ulrich is a widely travelled Swiss national who spent years looking for his ideal vineyard in Switzerland and Germany, before extending his search to Italy, Colline di Sopra was his first and last Italian stop.
Colline di Sopra is outside Montescudaio in the Cecina valley, just 10 km from the sea and 15km from Bolgheri. The estate was established in 2006 and bought by Ulrich in 2015, it covers a total of 93 hectares of which just 12 are vineyard. The soils are mineral rich loams, rich in maritime fossils on limestone. The valley enjoys constant breezes that create a cooler climate than the more famous coastal Tuscan wine zones.
The vines are farmed on strict organic and biodynamic principals, the aim is not just to maintain, but to improve the environment using selected cover crops like red clover, mustard and phacelia; soil preparations that include horn matures, horn silica, nettle valerian, orange extract and milk.
The winemaking only uses wild-yeast fermentation, and all the wines are made with neither sulphites nor filtration. This is hardcore, detailed winemaking, executed with passion and finesse.
