Piedirosso is one of Italy’s most ancient grape varieties; the name means ‘red feet’, a description of the red colour the stems take as the berries mature. There are only 1000 hectares of Piedirosso, and the vast majority is in Campania and Puglia.
Gennaro makes 3 red wines, all from Piedirosso. The Sorbo comes from rich, volcanic soils on a northwest-facing slope, topped with Sorbo and lemon trees. Many of the vines are over 100 years old and it took him 10 years to organise a Guyot* training system. The work is manual, the fermentation is in open tonneau* using a spontaneous fermentation. It is kept on the skins for 15 days before being aged in botti* (10hl) for just under a year.
