Barolo

Brezza are one of the original great names of Barolo. Their first vineyards were purchased in 1885 by Giacomo Brezza and they now have twelve and a half hectares, including land in the famed cru’s (vineyards) of Cannubi, Castellero and Sarmassa.

In total the family release around 80,000 bottles a year, half of which is Barolo. The famous family restaurant and hotel in the centre of Barolo, run by the exuberant Oreste Brezza, is a legend and destination for both locals and international lovers of Piemontese cuisine. It is their wines though which are causing a stir in Barolo.

Oreste’s son, Enzo, took charge of the winemaking in 1989 and he has achieved the remarkable feat of changing everything, whilst changing very little. Enzo’s experience includes working in the great modernist winemaking temples of California and Australia and his godfather was the ultra-traditional Bartolo Mascarello. These contradictory streams have been distilled into a clear vision for his wines, where the role of the vignaiolo is infinitely more significant than that of the enologist.

The vineyards are managed with sympathy to the environment and are now registered as organic. Brezza also own just under a hectare of Barbera planted in Santa Rosalia, a vineyard area just outside of Barolo on the way to the beautiful town of Diano d’Alba. Vines thrive here at an altitude of three hundred metres on a west facing slope.
