Pino. Rosso di Montalcino
Rosso di Montalcino DOC.
An honest, loose-limbed wine with fresh-picked forest fruit flavours and a gentle grip of tannin. An absolute classic, elegant and poised with admirable restraint.
The vineyard was planted in 2000 on a gentle south-west facing slope, situated 350 metres above sea level. Grass is left to grow (where it can) between the rows of vines. Only natural fertilisers are used. The vines are picked by hand and carried the short distance to the winery in small plastic crates. After the grapes have been sorted, they are given a lengthy maceration and spontaneous fermentation with regular manual punching down of the skins that float to the top of the steel tank.
This wine was then transferred to a fifty hectolitre Slovenian oak botti grande (a very large barrel) where it matured for eight months. It was then bottled without filtration.
