Demarie. Barbaresco Riserva
Mint and white flowers mark this notably fresh nose, immaculate refined on the palate where the red fruits are giving way the secondary spice and porcini. 13.5%
The 2006 is the first Barbaresco Riserva that Demarie made. The vineyard is in Canova, it was planted in 1968 on chalky clay soils and faces Northeast. They have rented two small vineyards and space in a friend’s winery with the intention of making a Barbaresco and a Barbaresco Riserva in exceptional vintages.
The Riserva is an ultra-traditional wine; the vines were hand-picked, bunches sorted before a long fermentation with a regular punching down of the cap (skins and stalk that float to the surface). The wine was transferred to a single 25 hectolitre botti where it remained for 7 years.
It was a courageous decision to age the wine in botti for 7 years, this is very unusual. To then mature the wine in bottle for another 5 years may have affected their cash flow, but to release a wine that is ready to drink, this is what must be done - and it was done with generous spirit.
