The Abruzzo is synonymous with the Montepulciano vine and, until 2016, the only DOC on offer was Montepulciano d’Abruzzo which certainly offered us consumers a nice simple proposition. Even the complication of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano has been resolved with the producers in the Tuscan town of Montepulciano agreeing to change to change the name of their wine to ‘Vino Nobile’. Remarkably, (wine) things in the Abruzzo are making sense.
Montori’s Montepulciano is a template for modern Montepulciano their vines are trained using a spurred cordon system, most of which surround the cantina. Yields are limited to approximately eleven tons of grapes per hectare, harvested by hand in the first part of October. Fermentation is on the skins and takes just over a week at temperatures kept between 28˚C and 30˚C. The wine is racked off the skins and ages whilst it goes through malolactic conversion in steel
