Antoniolo. Gattinara 'Le Castelle'
Le Castelle is the vineyard in and around the ruins of the castle on the high plateau (400m) alongside Gattinara’s iconic tower. The vines were planted in the 80s and the soils here are richer and deeper than the other Antoniolo crus. The mineral content is high, there are less rocks and the ground is less compact, it would be easier to work were there not a castle sitting in the middle of the vineyard.
The vines are harvested by hand and the grapes undergo a spontaneous fermentation. The ageing is first in barrique, mostly used for two years, the wine is then assembled and aged in botti (20hl) for another year.
