Fossati is on the western side of La Morra, it has a deserved reputation for long-lived wines with finesse as well as weight, a very different beast to its neighbour, Sarmassa (in the commune of Barolo).  Bricco Rocca is a little lower, where the aspect of the slopes provides the vines with excellent exposure to the sun, producing wines with finesse and balance, softer and more floral in style.  The soils in both crus (plots) are similar: lowish sand (25%), highish levels of clay (39%), iron levels are high in Fossati.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e2017 is a much misunderstood vintage, it was very hot and dry, but the previous year wasn’t and reserves of water were good.  The vines showed no stress, the berries were a little smaller, it was a very good vintage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e2013 produced a number of challenges: the spring was cold and wet and summer started late, this meant the fruit set was late and not as generous as usual. He gives the wine a remarkable 18 months in barrel because he wants the Nebbiolo to have lost some of the primary fruit flavours and gained a little tertiary complexity before releasing it. La Morra is famous for making the archetypal Barolo and it is no surprise that Lapo has had to work extremely hard to find the fruit to make this wine. His first port of call was a second selection from his Barolo, which is are now joined by vines that he has been working with in lesser sites with great potential.\u003cbr\u003eHis Nebbiolo is made in a very similar way to his Barolo: indigenous yeasts, a part of the fermentation in steel and a part in open demi-muids, nothing is added; no malo-bugs, no tannins or fructose. It is unusual to find Incrocio Manzoni this far south, the variety is a crossing of Riesling with Pinot Bianco, originally developed in the 1930s by Luigi Manzoni at the Instito di Viticoltura of Conegliano. It really works here though, thriving in the Tuscan heat.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe vineyard was planted using a Cordone Speronato* system, at a low density that yields just 5 tons per hectare. The grapes are pressed, and the juice given a cold soak* for 10 hours before a temperature-controlled fermentation using selected yeasts takes place. The wine is then aged on the lees* for 5 months, which brings a subtle texture to the finished wine.
