Paolo Petrilli. 'Agramante' Cacc'e Mmitte di Lucera
Cacc'e Mmitte di Lucera DOC
Grapes 60% Nero di Troia with Montepulciano, Sangiovese, Bombino
The classic wine of the estate and if Paolo had to choose a favourite, I am sure this would be it.
The vineyard is a single limestone slope, pale with chalk, it is open to the sea breezes coming off the Garganega peninsula, the south facing aspect ensures no shortage of light. The vines are planted at a density of five thousand plants per hectare and are trained using a single cordon system. Just over a kilogram of fruit is taken from each vine. In 2010 fermentation was moved from steel to 600 litre open upright barrels, using the wild yeasts of the vineyard and not using temperature control. The wine is then transferred to used oak barrels and steel tanks for a year. It bottled without filtration.
Paolo regards this as his opus and it is easy to understand why, the blueberry and raspberry fruit is so pure, the tannins so silky, with wonderful depths of mocha and sloe.

It is difficult to believe that this wine can get any better, the fruit has such purity, such definition of raspberry and blueberry fruit, velvet on marble and undoubtedly the best Agramante yet. Intense with fine ripe tannins, a touch of spice and mocha.
2011 (14.5%) - no longer available
Blueberry and cassis on the nose, fine ripe tannins and mineral core, mint and mocha an extraordinary and intense wine whose complexity comes unaided by oak.

A remarkable wine whose poise and elegance is reminiscent of Nebbiolo from the Alto Piemonte, it has that fine orange peel lift which balances the blueberry and plum fruit. Touches of spice and mint combine harmoniously. It is a style of wine that I don't really want to tell anybody about, certainly not share it with other wine merchants, a gem that has lifted the bar for Uva di Troia wines.
Production 6,700 bottles.

Blueberry, damson and spiced raspberry aromas which also dominate the taste. A warm, easy, beautifully balanced wine which opens in the glass to reveal a plethora of intricate nuances of cinnamon, date and a touch of violet.
