Carmingnano DOCG

Grapes: Sangiovese (85%), Cabernet Sauvignon (15%), Canaiolo (10%)

Very natural on the nose, bramble and cherry, a touch of spice and ripe herb, quite enticing. In the mouth it has a lovely unforced feel to it, powerful without being concentrated.

Carmignano is one of Toscana’s oldest named red wines; and the only appellation that insists on the inclusion of Cabernet Sauvignon along with the Sangiovese. Rossella’s vineyard is between 180 and 300 metres above sea level and surrounded by woodland. The vines are planted at a low density, 2700 vines per hectare using either a Guyot or Cordone speronato training system. The old part of the vineyard is 41 years old, another part is now 6 years old, all are farmed biodynamically.
The vines were harvested by hand: the Sangiovese and Canaiolo grapes in the first week of October and the Cabernet Sauvignon in the second week. The bunches are de-stemmed and both macerated and fermented in cement tanks using indigenous yeasts and no additions. The wine is then decanted into tonneaux (350 litre Allier barrels), where it remains to evolve over two years.
