Santa Vittoria. Poggio al Tempio

Santa Vittoria. Poggio al Tempio

Toscana IGT
Grapes: Sangiovese (70%), Pugnitello (20%), Foglia Tonda (10%)

2020 (13%)
Plum, damson, and moist tobacco aromas. There is some real clout on the palate: black cherry and damson, roast red pepper with an earthy, leathery nuance. A great vintage.

The blend of Sangiovese, Pugnitello and Foglia Tonda is applicable to a Chianti, the geography is not. That said, the local Chianti Aretini is the least renowned of the Chianti satellites so perhaps it is no bad thing that the farm is just outside of the area.
The vines are now over 20 years old, planted using a ‘cordon speronato*’ system at a density of 4300 plants per hectare. Fermentation and ageing is in cement tanks; the style has been moderated a little by shortening the time with the skins to between 6-8 days and introducing some micro-oxygenation while the wine ages for 10 months.
The wine is released ‘ready to drink’, however, it has proved to have an impressive capacity to develop with age.
The 2020 is an extraordinary vintage, this is a minor legend in the making.
