Sampietrana. Brindisi Riserva '68'
Brindisi DOC Riserva.
Grapes Negroamaro (80%) and Montepulciano (20%).
1952 with a different label.
Ripe plum, fig and roasted tomatoes on the nose. Round, full mature tannins, nutmeg and cocoa, porcini and deep black cherry and plum fruit. A great, rich well-made wine, an absolute classic Brindisi DOC.
There are some super ripe date and dried fig elements, a touch of earthy tannin, no forced sweetness and no new barrique flavours, this style is a massive upgrade on the old Puglian wines of my youth but the DNA remains unchanged; an uncompromising powerhouse, old vines, old barrels, unfussy, proper winemaking. 13.5%
