Recchia

Negrar, Veneto

A true family business that was started in earnest by brothers, Riccardo and Roberto Recchia, who had made a name for themselves supplying grapes to many of the great wine houses of Valpolicella. The brothers remain instrumental but have handed the running of the business to the next generation. Chiara runs the commercial side and her brother Enrico is the winemaker, cellarmaster Silvio Penna is a steady hand with valuable experience gained at Masi under the legendary Nino Franceschetti (creator of Campo Fiorin).

The latest family acquisition is Villa Bertoldi, a fifteenth century Venetian palace, recognised as one of the finest in the region. It requires a complete renovation however, Riccardo and Roberto’s father had originally worked the vineyards that encompass the Palazzo, it is only a mile up the road from the winery at Masùa: providence and nostalgia are a strong motivation.
There is a certain freshness and an unforced clarity that runs through Recchia’s wines, their philosophy is an enlightened take on traditional winemaking. There is experimentation, but what makes the range extraordinary is their ability to select the best grapes and their steadfast and classic approach to the winemaking. Recchia have enough land to triple their production, but choose to bottle only the best and sell the rest either as finished wines for branding or as grapes to other producers.
