Andrea Buzio completed his dissertation on Albarossa, a variety created in a laboratory by Giovanni Dalmasso in 1936, who declared a crossing of Piemonte’s great red grapes Barbera and Nebbiolo and it was named Incrocio 13.26. The result was excellent, however studies in the mid 60’s uncovered the fact that it is a Barbera and Chatus (Nebbiolo di Donero) crossing, which was subsequently renamed Albarossa.
The Albarossa vineyard is now 10 years old, it is Guyot trained* at a density of 5000 vines per hectare, the soils are chalky on a south-facing slope. It is organically farmed, with great care taken to respect the local environment.
The grapes are hand-picked and fermented in steel before being transferred to French oak barrique*and tonneaux* of varying ages where the wine matures for 8 months.
