Lis Fadis. Chardonnay 'Guriut'
Chardonnay Friuli Colli Orientali DOC
These clones of Chardonnay were recovered from the Abbey of Rosazzo, a Benedictine order whose experience with viticulture stretches back to the 13th century. The vineyard is between fifteen and twenty years old, planted single Guyot with four or five shoots per vine, yields are tiny. It is planted on terraces with a south-west exposure, the soils are marl on limestone at 200m.
All vineyard work is by hand, the harvest is collected in small crates and every bunch is inspected first in the vineyard and then on a brightly lit, vibrating selection table.
The grapes are pressed and macerated for eight to sixteen hours at 11-12 degrees. Around twenty percent of the fermentation is in oak casks, where it remains on the lees for 8-9 months whilst the remainder is fermented and held in cement tanks. The finished wines are then assembled and bottled after a few months where they remain for at least twelve months before being released.
Production 2000-2500 bottles.
A thoughtful and complex wine with beautifully weighted peach, lemon and apricot fruit. Delicate mineral and floral elements with a touch of vanilla spice. This is a style of Chardonnay that I find irresistible, restrained and nuanced, just a touch of lees, very correct and a pleasure on many levels. 13.5%
