Lapo Berti. Langhe Nebbiolo

Lapo Berti. Langhe Nebbiolo

Langhe Nebbiolo DOC
Grape: Nebbiolo

The truth is that this wine could be mistaken for very good Barolo. The vintage is a classic which balances floral flavours with rich fruit, no bumps in the road. Already very drinkable with rounded black berry, leather and spice, a touch of violet and rose. I’ll do very well to find another Langhe Nebbiolo better than this.

Lapo likes to point out that the rules for ‘Langhe Nebbiolo’ generously allow up to fifteen percent of other, authorised red grapes, and that his is (correctly) a pure Nebbiolo from vines within the commune of La Morra. He gives the wine a remarkable 18 months in barrel because he wants the Nebbiolo to have lost some of the primary fruit flavours and gained a little tertiary complexity before releasing it. La Morra is famous for making the archetypal Barolo and it is no surprise that Lapo has had to work extremely hard to find the fruit to make this wine. His first port of call was a second selection from his Barolo, which is are now joined by vines that he has been working with in lesser sites with great potential.
His Nebbiolo is made in a very similar way to his Barolo: indigenous yeasts, a part of the fermentation in steel and a part in open demi-muids, nothing is added; no malo-bugs, no tannins or fructose. The wine is aged in used barrels and bottled without filtration with a miniscule amount of SO2 (60mg/l).
