Usually the vine is well suited to fresh, young simple wines; there is far more to it though, rarely known for its its ability to age, vermentino will mature for many years, keeping its freshness and developing an almost Riesling-like character.\u003cbr\u003eThere is a limited pool of great white wine to call on in Tuscany and Kalendamaia is a step towards rectifying this.\u003cbr\u003eGuyot trained vines at a density of 5500plants\/ha, planted on the flatter part of the land which has deeper clays. At Il Poggiolo the Annata Brunello comes first, a Riserva will only be made when a barrel or two of the best wine can be hived off with no detrimental effect. \u003cbr\u003eRegulations stipulate that a Riserva must be aged for another twelve months before release, the minimum period of two years in oak is the same for both Brunello and Brunello Riserva. In reality the wine benefits from a little extra time in oak thanks to the quality of the raw materials. Rudi’s Riserva spends 36 months in French oak (mainly tonneaux (500ltr) and some barrique (225ltr)).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe grapes are picked by hand and transported the short distance to the winery in shallow trays. Fermentation is in large, open oak casks with a regular punching down of the cap. Vines are planted using a Guyot system at a density of 5500 vines per hectare, six bunches of grapes are left on each vine.\u003cbr\u003eThe vineyard is too steep to contemplate machinery and all the work, including the harvest must be done by hand. Producer of Greco di Tufo Fiano di Avelino Metodo Classico and Aglianico\" href=\"https:\/\/bat.wine\/collections\/di-marzo\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eCantine di Marzo producer page\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is a wistful, ethereal quality to the wines from Ortale.  The soils are sparse clays, broken by limestone and sulphur stones, old woodland for a neighbour.  The vines were planted in 2008 and 2012 using a Guyot* training system, at an unfashionably spacious 3000 vines per hectare.  \u003cbr\u003eThis, like most, was an unusual vintage: drought in July and August stressed the vines, relief came with rain in September. The crop was smaller than usual, the quality excellent.  Rain during the harvest kept everyone fit, running in and out of the vineyard, the stems were a little swollen, so the bunches were all de-stemmed before a gentle pressing.  Fermentation was in temperature-controlled steel tanks using selected yeasts, the wine stayed on the lees for 9 months, in this time it went through malolactic conversion*.  The finished wine was bottle aged for 2 years in di Marzo’s ancient underground cellars.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOrtale has the highest content of volcanic rock.  In Ferrante’s opinion, Ortale is ‘the dreamer’, a wine with an ethereal quality.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eArchive \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e2019:  An intense, finely textured, bone dry white, that hints at tropical fruit, white peach and hay.
