PiculÌt Neri delle Venezie IGT
Grape PiculÌt Neri
2019: Blackcurrant and ripe plum on the nose; kirsch and cassis flavours, a nice intensity and power. A classic and elegant wine. 13%
PiculÌt Neri takes its name from the tiny bunches of grapes that it yields. It is only planted in a small area in the province of Pordenone. Many confuse it with PiculÌt of Eastern Friuli, but the two grapes are very different: PiculÌt is a white grape, usually dried prior to fermentation to make a sweet wine; this is a red grape used for dry red wines. I do wonder why so few producers have plantings of the vine as it has the potential to make these hills famous.
In 2008, maturation was moved from steel to botti (large oak casks which hold 4,000 litres) for 12 months prior to bottling and this, combined with the maturation of the principal vineyard above the Chapel in Pinzano has rendered fantastic results. Notably tannins have become more silky, reminiscent of a fine Burgundy, the flavours are less berry and more complex.
2018: Raspberry and black currants with a dusting of fine tannin, cedar and cassis, a glass of wine to loose yourself in. 13%
